With the continuous evolution of High - Energy Laser (HEL) weapons
Western nations have undertaken extensive verification testing for laser interception of Rapid-Attack Munitions (RAM)
including mortar and rocket shells. This is crucial for the operational deployment of laser weapons in combat situations. In contrast
similar initiatives in China have not been reported yet. The purpose of this study is to create a test scenario for the interception of RAM targets like mortar shells using laser weapons and to devise a strategy for determining the optimal deployment position of the weapon system relative to the target trajectory during testing.Based on the simulated trajectory of mortar shells
the criterion of maximizing the accumulated laser energy on the projectile is adopted as the basis for the determination of the optimal deployment position. The results indicated that in a tangential interception scenario
the shorter the route shortcut
the higher the laser energy accumulation on the projectile. An optimal position existed along the trajectory’s launch direction that maximizes the accumulated laser energy on the projectile. In radial interception test scenarios
the closer the deployment position to the point of impact
the greater the laser energy accumulation on the projectile. These results can serve as a foundation for designing RAM tests
such as the interception of mortar shells by HEL weapons
and can also offer support for the subsequent practical application and deployment of HEL weapons.
