Design of large field-of-view low-distortion aerial lens based on high-order aspheres
To meet the conflicting requirements of ultra-wide-angle coverage and low-distortion imaging for high-precision portable platforms such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
a high-performance aerial lens is designed using ZEMAX software. The proposed lens features a focal length of 4 mm
an
F
-number of 2.8
and a diagonal field of view (FOV) of 113.6°. To overcome the geometric distortion and image quality degradation typ
ically associated with large FOVs
the design adopts a 10-element asymmetric retrofocus structure. Furthermore
high-order double-sided aspheric surfaces are introduced at core correction positions to precisely decouple and suppress off-axis high-order aberrations and distortion. Structurally
an optical back focal length (BFL) of approximately 10 mm is achieved
providing sufficient space for sensor integration. The design results indicate that the optical distortion across the entire field is strictly controlled within 0.8%
and the maximum field curvature is less than 0.08 mm. At the Nyquist frequency of 70 lp/mm
the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) remains consistently above 0.5 for the full field of view
and the system exhibits good relative illumination across the image plane. In addition
tolerance analysis verifies that the design possesses good manufacturing feasibility under conventional precision machining conditions. This design successfully resolves the constraints between ultra-wide angle
low distortion
and long back focal length
delivering balanced performance that meets the rigorous requirements for high-resolution aerial photography and measurement.
